International trade, commodity marketing and co-operatives in Africa

The ICA Africa Conference and Regional Assembly held in Mauritius was marked by a positive atmosphere which emphasised the members hope for the future of co-operation throughout Africa. Some 20 countries were represented from all parts of the continent. Discussion and presentions during the conference linked the development of agricultural co-operatives with liberalisation of the marketplace and challenges of financing new projects. The high moment of the Regional Assembly was the election of Mr. Hosea Kiplagat, Chairperson of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya and member of the ICA Board. Mr. Kipligat will replace Mr. Ousseynou Dieng as the ICA Vice-President for Africa at the General Assembly in Oslo in September, 2003. Both Conference and Assembly were attended by representatives of the Mauritian government and addressed by the Minister of Commerce and Co-operatives. Visits to Mauritian co-operatives attested to the healthy state of the movement on the island. The ICA President and Director-General attended the Assembly and found the African movement looking positively towards the future.
